M and I are right smack-dab at the beginning of a very eventful season for us! With the Army, and moving, and all the stuff that happens in between!
By September, we will have spent at minimum, 2-3 days, if not 2-3 weeks in over 6 states. We are fortunately to have family and friends, and opportunities for travel and work in such a variety of places!
Last weekend, I had the privilege of watching a college friend marry a man who makes her laugh more than anyone, ever. This seems so much more important, knowing how much she loves to laugh and how sweet she is. Many friends I thought I would never see again were there, as well. It was a quick, but enjoyable time! Congratulations to Liz! Getting married is so much fun! Being married is a blessing.
M & I spent this weekend (well, Friday-Saturday) in New Orleans, LA. We were both skeptical about how WE would perceive the city since it seems to be hit or miss for others. One either loves it or hates it.
We definitely found that there were some very gritty, gross, stinky, and pretty much terrible moments to be had in New Orleans. However, there were a few redeeming qualities in their museums. We only got to see the WW2 Museum, but I highly recommend it if you have the chance to go. The of cost of life, military movement, faces and pictures brought the tragedies of this last great war home. Even knowing and living in the reality of the war we know now, it is hard to believe that the ENTIRE world was at war. I can't wrap my mind around it. You saw maps of every continent being plotted for battles and war. The movie produced by Tom Hanks that was shown was moving and downright disturbing! Anyhow, that was the WW2 Museum. We also saw (but did not visit) the Katrina Museum, which would be something to look at.
I would say, coming from Savannah, GA first, there's really nothing I'd want from New Orleans except for the Beignets from Cafe Du Monde! Bourbon Street was a nightmare and a half, and the heat was oppressive (not NO's fault). We stayed in the French Quarter, so I thought perhaps there would be some neat places, but it seemed that most everything except the bars on Bourbon were closed. However, as M noted, "it definitely meets a need, I guess." Redeeming in the sense that there were many other things to do other than drink: The zoo, aquarium, casino, museums... a lot for one city to offer.
In our words, and the words of the flight attendant and pilot this morning, "I wasn't very impressed by New Orleans" ... "Most never are." I see a great sense of pride coming from locals, and that's good. We spent Saturday night near the Airport, and the little cities around the downtown area of New Orleans seem like decent places to be. I always wonder why NO decided to build out, to the water, instead of inland, like the rest of the world would.
We left New Orleans early (so early...) this morning, and are onto our next adventure in another state!
